The cycling race known as the Tour of Holland has a long history, though it has gone by various names and has had periods of dormancy.
The race’s original iteration was the Tour of the Netherlands (Ronde van Nederland), which was first held in 1948.
Key historical points:
- 1948 – 2004 (Tour of the Netherlands): The race was held, initially intermittently, and then annually since 1975. The record for most victories belongs to Dutch rider Gerrie Knetemann, who won four times. Notable winners also include Rik Van Looy, Jan Janssen, and Joop Zoetemelk.
- 2005: The Tour of the Netherlands was replaced by the Eneco Tour (later the BinckBank Tour and currently the Renewi Tour) due to the start of the UCI ProTour. This new race was a stage race that took place in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
- 2025 (Tour of Holland Revival): After an absence under its original name, the race was re-established as the Tour of Holland (officially the NIBC Tour of Holland), returning to the UCI calendar with a UCI 2.1 status. The revived race has a new, challenging format, including a prologue, individual time trials, climbs, and a gravel stage.
