The Telenet Superprestige is one of the three major, season-long series in elite cyclo-cross, primarily held in Belgium. It is known as the oldest points-based criterium in cyclo-cross.
Here is a brief history:
- Founding: The Superprestige series began in the 1982-1983 season. The first overall winner was Dutchman Hennie Stamsnijder.
- Structure: It is a series of typically eight races held throughout the cyclo-cross season (roughly October to February). Riders earn points based on their finishing position in each race, and the rider with the highest cumulative total at the end is the overall winner.
- Belgian Dominance: The series has traditionally been dominated by Belgian riders, reflecting the country’s profound passion for the sport.
- Sven Nys’ Era: Cyclo-cross legend Sven Nys holds the record for the most overall victories in the Superprestige, with 13 titles between 1999 and 2014.
- Perfect Season: Only two riders have won all eight Superprestige races in a single season:
- Sven Nys in the 2006–07 season.
- Mathieu van der Poel in the 2018–19 season.
- Women’s Competition: A separate classification for Elite Women was later established and has grown in prominence.
- Telenet Sponsorship & Ownership: The telecommunications company Telenet is the current main sponsor, and the series is officially known as the Telenet Superprestige. Since 2018, the organization of the Superprestige has been handled by Flanders Classics, which also manages many of Belgium’s prestigious road cycling events.
The Superprestige, along with the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup and the X2O Badkamers Trofee, forms the core competition calendar for professional cyclo-cross racers each winter.
