The history of the X²O Badkamers Trofee Flandriencross in Hamme is rich with name changes, location moves, and famous winners.
Here is a summary of its history:
1. The Early Years: Bollekescross (2002–2013)
- First Edition: The race was first held in 2002.
- Original Name: It was initially known as the Bollekescross, named after a beer brand from the main sponsor, De Koninck Brewery.
- Location: The race was originally held in the Hamme sub-municipality of Zogge.
- Series: From 2004 to 2013, it was part of the prestigious Superprestige series.
- Notable: The Belgian Cyclo-cross Championships were held on the Zogge course in January 2007.
2. The Big Transition: Renaming and Series Change (2014–Present)
- Series Change: After the 2013 edition, the race switched to being part of the Cyclo-cross Trophy (now known as the X²O Badkamers Trofee).
- Renaming (2014): The name was changed to Flandriencross as a tribute to cyclist Greg Van Avermaet, a multiple-time winner of the “Flandrien of the Year” award who was born and raised in Hamme-Zogge.
- Location Move (2014): Due to disagreements with landowners, the race moved from Zogge to the main town of Hamme, specifically to the Meulenbroek domain, where it has been held ever since. The new course features wooded areas, ponds, and unpaved sections near the Durme river.
3. Key Champions and Legacy
The race has been won by many of cyclo-cross’s biggest names:
- Record Winner (Men): Sven Nys holds the record for the most victories with 7 wins (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012).
- Modern Dominators (Men): Mathieu van der Poel (with a five-win streak from 2016 to 2021) and Wout van Aert are also multiple winners in the Flandriencross era.
- Top Winner (Women): Sanne Cant has the most women’s elite victories with 3 wins.
In essence, the Flandriencross is the modern continuation of the Bollekescross, representing a key stop on the X²O Badkamers Trofee calendar in the heart of Flemish cycling country.
