TEAM LËTZEBUERG is the brand identity and collective name for the athletes and the entire support structure representing Luxembourg at multi-sport events, most notably the Olympic Games.
It embodies the passion, team spirit, strength, pride, and solidarity of the Luxembourg sporting family, including the athletes, coaches, medical and technical staff, sports federations, commercial partners, supporters, and families.
The formal body behind TEAM LËTZEBUERG is the Luxembourg Olympic and Sporting Committee (Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois, or COSL).
History of the COSL / TEAM LËTZEBUERG
The history is tied to the founding and evolution of the national Olympic committee:
- 1912: Foundation of the Comité Olympique Luxembourgeois (C.O.L.)
- The first Olympic association, the Comité Olympique Luxembourgeois (C.O.L.), was founded by the union of the Luxembourg Gymnastics Societies and the Federation of Luxembourg Athletic Sports Societies (which included football, athletics, swimming, and cycling).
- The C.O.L. was officially recognized as the National Olympic Committee (NOC) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year, allowing Luxembourg to send its first team to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.
- 1925: The C.O.L. adopted its first statutes and counted seven sports federations as members.
- 1952: Olympic Gold
- Luxembourg achieved a significant milestone when Josy Barthel won the gold medal in the men’s 1500 meters at the Helsinki Summer Olympics, which remains the country’s only individual Olympic gold.
- 1974: Restructuring and New Name
- The Luxembourg Olympic and sporting movement underwent a major restructuring.
- The C.O.L. broadened its scope and was renamed the Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL). This new committee was established to bring together all sports and sport-related federations in the country.
- 1978: Official Recognition
- The COSL was officially recognized by the Government in Council as the central body for sport in Luxembourg.
- 2012: Centenary
- The COSL celebrated 100 years of Olympism in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The name TEAM LËTZEBUERG is used to collectively refer to the country’s representation at multi-sport events, a public face for the efforts orchestrated by the COSL
