The UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship is an annual tournament for European national teams of women under the age of seventeen, organized by UEFA.
The competition is generally divided into three main phases: two qualifying rounds and the final tournament.
1. The Qualification Phase (Rounds 1 and 2)
All eligible UEFA national teams participate in a structured qualification system using a two-tiered league format (League A and League B), which includes promotion and relegation. The format typically works as follows:
- Round 1: Teams are sorted into League A (stronger teams) and League B (remaining teams) based on their ranking from the previous season.
- Teams in League A play in mini-tournaments. The teams finishing fourth in their group are relegated to League B for Round 2.
- Teams in League B play in mini-tournaments. The group winners are promoted to League A for Round 2.
- Round 2: The leagues are re-formed with the promoted and relegated teams.
- Teams in League A compete in new mini-tournaments. The group winners qualify for the Final Tournament.
- Teams in League B compete for promotion to League A for the next season’s competition.
- The Host: The final tournament host nation is automatically qualified for the final tournament but still participates in the qualifying rounds to ensure competitive matches.
2. The Final Tournament
The final tournament typically involves 8 teams: the host nation and the 7 teams that qualify through Round 2 of League A.
- Group Stage: The 8 teams are divided into two groups of four (Group A and Group B). They play a round-robin format within their group (each team plays the other three once).
- Knockout Stage: The top two teams from each group advance to the Semi-finals.
- Semi-finals and Final: The tournament proceeds with single-match knockout games to determine the champion. (There is sometimes a play-off for third place, especially in years that qualify teams for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup).
3. FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualification
In even-numbered years, the UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship also serves as the European qualifying competition for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The number of European teams that qualify for the World Cup is determined by FIFA, but generally, the top-performing teams at the EURO qualify.

From November 3 to 9, 2025, Luxembourg will host the first qualifying round for the 2025-2026 WU17 European Championship.
