The UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifiers are the competition phase that determines which European men’s under-21 national teams will participate in the final tournament of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Here is a breakdown of the typical qualification process (using the 2027 edition as an example):
- Participants: All UEFA member associations’ under-21 teams, except the host nation(s) who qualify automatically.
- Qualifying Group Stage: The teams are drawn into several groups (e.g., nine groups). They play matches in a home-and-away round-robin format.
- Direct Qualification: The teams that finish in first place in each qualifying group, along with the best-ranked runner-up across all groups, qualify directly for the final tournament (along with the hosts).
- Play-offs: The remaining runners-up (the eight other second-placed teams) advance to a play-off round. This involves two-legged, home-and-away matches.
- Finalists: The winners of the play-offs secure the final spots in the tournament.
The overall goal is to select the best teams from Europe to compete in the biennial final tournament. The tournament is also significant as it often serves as the UEFA qualification tournament for the Summer Olympics men’s football competition.
The draw for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying competition has already taken place. It was held on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
The teams were drawn into nine groups: six groups of six teams and three groups of five teams.
Here are the qualifying groups:
- Group A: Spain, Romania, Finland, Kosovo, Cyprus, San Marino.
- Group B: Portugal, Czechia, Bulgaria, Scotland, Azerbaijan, Gibraltar.
- Group C: France, Switzerland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Estonia.
- Group D: England, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Andorra.
- Group E: Italy, Poland, Sweden, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Armenia.
- Group F: Germany, Georgia, Greece, Northern Ireland, Latvia, Malta.
- Group G: Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Group H: Ukraine, Croatia, Hungary, Türkiye, Lithuania.
- Group I: Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Wales, Belarus.
The qualifying group stage runs from September 2025 to October 2026. The nine group winners and the best runner-up will qualify directly for the final tournament, joining co-hosts Albania and Serbia. The other eight runners-up will compete in play-offs for the final four spots.
