The Automobile Club du Luxembourg (ACL), founded in 1932, has been the backbone of motorsport in the Grand Duchy for nearly a century. While widely known for roadside assistance, the club’s history is deeply rooted in high-speed competition, from organizing early hillclimbs to governing modern racing as a member of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).
Early Beginnings (1930s)
Shortly after its founding, the ACL began promoting motorsport to showcase the capabilities of the “modern” automobile.
- 1933: The club organized its first major international event, a Hillclimb at Echternach, featuring legendary marques like Bugatti and Alfa Romeo.
- 1938/1939: To celebrate the centenary of Luxembourg’s independence, the ACL organized the Grand Prix du Centenaire on the Neudorf-Kalchesbreck circuit. This race remains one of the most prestigious in the country’s history, won by the charismatic Jean-Pierre Wimille in a Bugatti.
The “Golden Age” of the Luxembourg Grand Prix (1949–1952)
Following World War II, the ACL was instrumental in reviving European racing by establishing the official Luxembourg Grand Prix.
- The Neudorf Circuit: This 3.7 km street circuit was notorious for its narrow roads and steep gradients.
- Formula 3 Era: In 1951 and 1952, the GP transitioned to 500cc Formula 3 cars. Future legends like Stirling Moss and Les Leston competed here, with Leston winning the 1952 edition. These races put Luxembourg on the map as a legitimate stop for international drivers.
ACL Sport & Modern Governance
Today, the club’s sporting branch, ACL Sport, serves as the National Sporting Authority (ASN) for Luxembourg, delegated by the FIA.
- Governing Body: It is responsible for issuing racing licenses, training track marshals, and ensuring safety standards for all motorsport events in the country.
- Nurturing Talent: ACL Sport manages “Team Luxembourg,” sending elite athletes to the FIA Motorsport Games. In 2024, the delegation competed in Valencia across 9 disciplines, including Formula 4 and Cross Car.
- Karting: Since 2020, ACL has operated the Mondercange Go-Kart Track, a circuit where legends like Michael Schumacher and Jarno Trulli once raced.
Historic Preservation & Community
The ACL maintains a strong link to its racing heritage through several flagship events:
- ACL Classic Tour: An annual rally for historic vehicles that follows picturesque routes across the country.
- Race X – ACL Champions Edition: Launched in late 2025 at the International Motor Show, this new competition allows Luxembourgish champions to compete in cross-cars to showcase their talent to the public.
- Amicale des Véhicules Historiques: Established in 1978, this branch defends the interests of classic car owners and organizes events like the “Oldtimermaart.”
