The Six Nations Championship has a long and storied history, predating the current six-team format.
The current Men’s Six Nations Championship, which includes England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales, has been played in its current form since 2000 when Italy joined the competition.
However, the history of the championship stretches back much further:
- Home Nations Championship (1883–1909): The tournament began in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship, contested by the four ‘Home Nations’ of the United Kingdom: England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
- Five Nations Championship (1910–1931 and 1947–1999): France officially joined the tournament in 1910, creating the Five Nations Championship. The competition was suspended during both World Wars and for a period in the 1930s when France was temporarily expelled.
- Six Nations Championship (2000–Present): In 2000, the addition of Italy expanded the competition to the six countries that compete today, renaming it the Six Nations Championship.
