The history of the The Swiss Cyclocross Cup
The history of the Swiss Cyclocross Cup, known in German as the Schweizer Radquer Cup, is quite recent, with its roots in a predecessor series.
Here is a summary of its history:
1. Predecessor: EKZ CrossTour (2014โ2021)
The origins of the modern Swiss national cyclocross series lie with the EKZ CrossTour.
- Establishment: The EKZ CrossTour was founded in 2014.
- Structure: It was an annual series of typically three to six races held from September to January, organized to bundle the Swiss cyclocross races and offer a prestigious overall classification based on a points system.
- International Appeal: The series often attracted good international participation, though not consistently the absolute top-tier riders like Mathieu van der Poel or Wout van Aert.
- COVID-19 Hiatus: The series was not held for the 2021/2022 season after the main sponsor (EKZ) departed and the search for a new sponsor was unsuccessful, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2. The Swiss Cyclocross Cup (2022โPresent)
The series was successfully relaunched under a new name and structure:
- Relaunch: A new race series, officially called the Swiss Cyclocross Cup, was organized starting in the 2022/2023 season.
- Continuity: The new cup maintained continuity, with one of the co-organizers of the former EKZ CrossTour and the “Swiss Cyclocross” internet platform continuing their involvement.
- Race Calendar: The restarted series initially included new locations like Schneisingen, Mettmenstetten, and Bulle, alongside former staples like Hittnau and Meilen. It typically consists of four to five races per season.
- Objective: The goal remains to provide a unified series of UCI-sanctioned cyclocross races in Switzerland, promoting the sport domestically and internationally.
Context: Cyclocross in Switzerland
While the Cup itself is new, Switzerland has a long and notable history in the sport of cyclocross (Radquer):
Decline and Revival: Interest waned in the 1990s with the rise of mountain biking, but the sport has experienced a modest revival in recent years, which the existence and success of the Swiss Cyclocross Cup and its predecessor demonstrate.
Early Beginnings: The first Swiss Cyclocross Championship was held in 1912.
Golden Age: The 1970s and 1980s were a “golden age” for Swiss cyclocross, largely thanks to the dominance of Albert Zweifel, who won the UCI World Championship five times (1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1986).

When more than 350 riders plunge into the mud in Hittnau on Sunday, December 7, it will be about much more than just the final race of this season’s Swiss Cyclocross Cup: the most spectacular course of the year will decide who makes history in the grand finale of a Swiss Cyclocross Cup that is more diverse, stronger, and more popular than ever before.
In all categories, the final decisions on the overall victory and thus the winner of the unmistakable red and white leader’s jersey will be made in Hittnau. Only in three classes have the overall winners already been decided: Thรฉo Thomas (Elite Men), Shana Huber (U19 Women) and Marie-Louise Schneider (Cross for All Women) can no longer be caught.
Hittnau is known for its spectacular course with the castle hill at its heart: a long running passage followed by a steep, technically demanding descent. The backdrop is traditionally atmospheric โ everything points to a real cyclocross festival.
Record numbers for the Swiss Cyclocross Cup
The 2025 season marks a milestone for the Swiss Cyclocross Cup. For the first time in the series’ short four-year history, all five races attracted well over 300 participants. The final competition in Hittnau continues this success story: over 350 starters are expected.
The final promises to be exciting from a sporting perspective. However, the Swiss are only outsiders in the two elite categories. Rebekka Estermann, the reigning Swiss champion, U23 rider Jana Glaus, and Lars Sommer and Nicolas Bard in the men’s category are considered the strongest domestic athletes on paper.
Hardly any top riders compared to the wealth of talent in the junior categories
Overall, the elite ranks in Switzerland are currently very thin, while the junior categories U13/U15, U17, and U19 boast strong fields. The fact that the two best-known Swiss cyclocross riders, Kevin Kuhn and Loris Rouiller (last year’s winner in Hittnau), are not competing in order to prepare for the intense second half of the season in the south over Christmas further exacerbates the situation.
This opens the door for favorites from abroad. In the women’s race, French leader Electa Gallezot and her compatriots Line Burquier and Perrine Clauzel are considered the top contenders. In the men’s race, overall leader Thรฉo Thomas (France) and Belgian
Hittnau is ready for a grand season finale โ exciting, atmospheric, and with sporting highlights for all age groups. Late registrations are possible in all categories up to one hour before the start.
