The Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters is the modern successor to Luxembourg’s long-running professional women’s tennis tradition. Its history spans two distinct eras: decades as a premier WTA Tour tournament followed by a transformation into an invitational legends event.
1. The WTA Era: BGL Luxembourg Open (1991–2021)
For 30 years, Luxembourg hosted one of Europe’s most popular indoor tour stops, organized by the IWTP (International Women’s Tennis Promotion).
- Beginnings: Launched as an exhibition event in 1991, it officially joined the WTA Tour in 1996 as a Tier III event in Kockelscheuer.
- Prestige & Champions: Over three decades, the tournament regularly attracted World No. 1s and Grand Slam champions. Former winners include Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, and Kim Clijsters (who won the WTA title 5 times).
- The Final WTA Chapter: In 2021, Denmark’s Clara Tauson defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the final edition of the WTA event, marking the 25th official WTA tournament in Luxembourg.
2. Transition to the Masters Concept (2022)
Following the 2021 event, the IWTP decided to shift away from the WTA circuit structure. They envisioned an intimate, elite invitational legends concept that moved the venue from Kockelscheuer to the d’Coque arena in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.
The Format:
- 8 Players: 4 former World Top 10 players and 4 former World Top 50 players (all retired from active tour competition).
- Knockout Structure: Single-elimination over 4 days (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Final) with a total prize purse of €110,000.
3. Champions & Tournament History (2022–Present)
| Year | Champion | Runner-up | Notable Highlights |
| 2022 | Kim Clijsters (BEL) | Martina Hingis (SUI) | Inaugural Masters edition; Clijsters won in Luxembourg 23 years after her first WTA win there. |
| 2023 | Anett Kontaveit (EST) | Andrea Petkovic (GER) | Kontaveit won shortly after retiring from the professional tour. |
| 2024 | Kirsten Flipkens (BEL) | Martina Hingis (SUI) | Hingis reached her second Luxembourg Masters final. |
| 2025 | Angelique Kerber (GER) | Alizé Cornet (FRA) | Former World No. 1 Kerber took the title in a 10-7 Champions Tie-break finish. |
