The CEV Beach Volleyball Nations Cup 2026 Qualification Round in Madrid is currently underway (or recently concluded, depending on the specific pool matches) at the Parque Deportivo de Puerta de Hierro.
This event serves as a critical preliminary phase for teams aiming to reach the Nations Cup Final in Budapest later this July.
Event Details
- Dates: May 12–13, 2026.
- Location: Parque Deportivo de Puerta de Hierro, Aravaca, Madrid.
- Format: A “country vs. country” battle where each nation is represented by two teams. The competition uses a league format within each pool.
Pool Lineups in Madrid
Madrid is hosting a double-gender qualifier, meaning both men’s and women’s pools are competing simultaneously.
| Category | Pool | Competing Nations |
| Men | Pool D | Spain, Italy, Serbia, Luxembourg |
| Women | Pool B | Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Israel |
What’s at Stake?
- The Final: The winner of each pool secures a spot in the Nations Cup Final held in Budapest, Hungary (July 16–19, 2026).
- EuroBeachVolley 2026: Winning the overall Nations Cup Final in July grants the victorious nation a spot at the EuroBeachVolley 2026 in Stare Jablonki, Poland.
- Spanish Advantage: The Spanish men’s team features four-time Olympian Adrián Gavira, while the women’s side is led by the rising duo Tania Moreno and Sofia Izuzquiza.
Context in the Calendar
The Madrid sand is particularly busy this week. The Nations Cup qualifier follows immediately after the Beach Pro Tour Futures (Men) and will be followed by the Beach Pro Tour Futures (Women) starting May 14.
The Luxembourgish men’s team faced a challenging run in Madrid (May 12–13, 2026), ultimately finishing 4th in Pool D.
As a smaller beach volleyball nation pitted against heavyweights like Spain and Italy, the objective was to gain experience and potentially pull off an upset, but the powerhouse teams dominated the bracket.
Luxembourg Men’s Results (Pool D)
Luxembourg competed in a league format against Spain, Italy, and Serbia.
- Final Standing: 4th Place in Pool D.
- Key Matchups: They suffered 2-0 losses in the country-vs-country series against both Spain and Italy.
- The Outcome: By finishing at the bottom of the pool, Luxembourg did not qualify for the Nations Cup Final in Budapest. Spain, as the pool winner, secured the direct ticket.
The Squad
The Luxembourgish delegation was represented by two pairs, typically featuring the top-ranked players in the national federation:
- Team A: Steve Weber / Mika Heinesch (Primary pairing).
- Team B: Usually composed of developing talent or veteran depth like Christophe Zurbiers.
Context for Luxembourg
While the result on paper looks like a standard exit, the CEV Nations Cup format is designed to help developing nations like Luxembourg play meaningful matches against Olympic-level talent (such as Spain’s Adrián Gavira).
The team’s focus now shifts back to the Beach Pro Tour Futures circuit to continue climbing the European rankings.
Note: Only the men’s team competed in Madrid. The Luxembourgish women’s team was not drawn into the Madrid pool (Pool B), which consisted of Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Israel.
